How Sheena Chohan Prepares Emotionally for Intense Screen Roles

“I Give Every Character My Complete Heart and Soul”

Mumbai, Bringing emotionally demanding characters to life is one of the biggest challenges an actor can face, and actress Sheena Chohan believes that authentic performances require far more than memorizing dialogues. For the actress, every role begins with a deep commitment to understanding the character’s emotional journey and preparing herself mentally, physically, and emotionally for the world she is about to enter.

Known for her dedication to her craft, Sheena reveals that once she signs a project, she immerses herself completely into the preparation process, ensuring that she can do justice to both the character and the filmmaker’s vision.

For example, when she played Avli in Sant Tukaram, she spent time in rural villages and observed the lives of local women to understand their rhythm, resilience, and emotional world. For a police officer role in the upcoming South film JMD, she shadowed a policewoman, closely studying the discipline, pressure, and lived reality of the profession. For her role as a Christian girl in the trial opposite Kajol, she spent time in Bandra churches, observing the space, the people, and the emotional atmosphere to ground the character in authenticity.

Speaking about her approach, Sheena shares, “The moment I say yes to a film, I start preparing myself for the character. Every role has its own emotional depth, challenges, and experiences. I believe that if you want audiences to truly connect with a character, you need to understand them from within. I give every character my complete heart and soul because that’s the only way I know how to work.”

For action-oriented projects, the preparation extends beyond emotional work. Sheena commits herself to intense fitness training and disciplined routines to physically transform into the role. At the same time, she consciously distances herself from distractions to maintain focus.

“Whenever I’m working on an intense role, I often detox from social media and disconnect from unnecessary noise around me. It helps me stay focused and emotionally available for the character. Preparation is not just about looking the part; it’s about feeling every emotion truthfully so that it translates naturally on screen,” she explains.

The actress believes that emotionally intense roles come with a responsibility to portray human experiences honestly while staying true to the director’s vision.

“Every film is a collective dream. As actors, we have the responsibility to honor that vision and give our absolute best. When the audience feels what the character feels, that’s when the magic truly happens. That’s always my goal,” Sheena concludes.

With her unwavering dedication and immersive preparation process, Sheena Chohan continues to prove that memorable performances are built on passion, discipline, and an uncompromising commitment to authenticity.
