Workshop on Resume and Profile Building for students GLS University

Ahmedabad GLS University’s Faculty of Commerce, under the auspice of ‘Kshitij – A Career Carving Cell’ where various expert speakers are invited to share their knowledge and inculcate values in the minds of this millennial generation organized a Career Enrichment workshop on ‘How to create and utilize a good Resume’ led by expert speaker Mr. Ujjwal Nagar.

The workshop on resume writing began with an interactive approach where the expert explained that a resume is essentially a tool to market one’s skills, experiences, and qualifications to potential employers. It serves as a first impression of a candidate and is vital for job applications, as it is often the deciding factor for shortlisting candidates for interviews.

Moving forward, the expert explained that a resume should not be generic. Instead, it should be tailor-made to fit the specific job and highlight the skills, qualifications, and experiences that align with the role. This personalization enhances the chances of standing out in the competitive job market. The workshop also delved into different styles of resumes, namely chronological, functional/skill-based, and a combination of both.

The chronological resume lists work experience in reverse order, highlighting the candidate’s career progression. The functional or skill-based resume focuses more on the individual’s skills and competencies rather than job history, making it ideal for those with limited experience or switching careers. The combination style merges the strengths of both approaches, allowing the candidate to showcase their skills and experience effectively.

One key aspect emphasized was the importance of using the right words. The resume should not simply list tasks and responsibilities but should highlight accomplishments and achievements, providing measurable outcomes to showcase the candidate’s impact.

The expert introduced three essential rules for resume writing to make it relevant, accomplishment-based and to read with no errors.

The workshop concluded with a valuable piece of advice: keep your resume concise. The expert suggested that a one-page resume is usually sufficient, especially for candidates early in their careers. A resume should not exceed one and a half pages, ensuring that it remains focused and easy to read. The event was co-ordinated by Dr. Aashal Bhatt and Dr. Kruti Shah.
