GCCI and BIS Celebrate Quality and Standardization at 78th Foundation Day Conclave

Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) in association with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Ahmedabad hosted a Quality Conclave on 6th January, 2025 in celebration of BIS 78th Foundation Day.

Ahmedabad, Honb’le Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel commended the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for its significant contributions to national development and underscored the importance of standardization in daily life. He pointed out that the new Gujarat Procurement Policy mandates adherence to BIS specifications for government procurement, aligning with the broader goals of the Viksit Bharat vision.

This initiative supports Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendrabhai Modi’s vision for a developed India by 2047, which seeks to transform the nation by its centenary of independence. The policy focuses on fostering economic growth, social progress and good governance, with a strong emphasis on empowering the youth as key agents of change. By requiring BIS specifications in government procurement, the Gujarat government is not only ensuring high quality but also creating an environment that nurtures innovation and sustainable progress, integral to the vision of Viksit Bharat.

In his inaugural address, Shri Sandeep Engineer, President, GCCI emphasized the pivotal role of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in improving product quality and urged industries to obtain BIS licenses. He stressed that this initiative is key to realizing India’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, aiming to transform the nation into a developed economy by its centenary.

He emphasized the importance of accelerating the standardization process to ensure consistent product quality, foster consumer trust and boost competitiveness in global markets. With India striving to become a $30 trillion economy, aligning with international quality standards will not only enhance Indian products but also position the country as a leader in quality assurance. By setting a benchmark for excellence, India can inspire other nations to adopt similar standards, contributing to a global culture of quality that benefits international trade and cooperation.

Shri Sumit Sengar, Director and Head, BIS Ahmedabad, highlighted BIS’s significant achievements and outlined its future goals. He shared that, as part of its recent initiatives, BIS has launched Standards Clubs in educational institutions to cultivate a sense of quality consciousness among the youth, with over 10,000 clubs established nationwide. Since its inception, BIS has been serving Gujarat through its Ahmedabad office, where local industries have successfully acquired more than 6,500 licenses. Gujarat has notably emerged as a key contributor to BIS’s broader efforts in enhancing product quality and standardization.

The conclave also featured presentations from industry leaders and representatives from various government departments, showcasing their quality assurance practices.
