GCCI Session on “Building a Safe Society: Our Collective Duty”

Ahmedabad,  GCCI Business Women Committee organized a session on “Building a Safe Society: Our Collective Duty” on 18th September, 2024. Udayan Care & Udayan Shalini Fellowships also joined for this interactive session.

The main speakers on the occasion were Dr. Jyotsna Yagnik, Former Principal Judge, Dr. Lavina Sinha, IPS, DCP (Cyber Crime), Gujarat Police and Dr. Prashant Bhimani, Psychologist. The session was moderated by Artist & Moderator Shri Dhvanit Thaker.

Welcoming the participants, GCCI President Shri Sandeep Engineer mentioned that the safe environment provided & assured at Home, at a work place and in public spaces will encourage people to make their whole-hearted contribution. He remarked that watchword has to be “Zero Tolerance”. He added that the highest standards of safety, probity & decency are established in work place.

Speaking on the occasion Business Women Committee Chairperson Ms. Prachi Patwari mentioned that safety is a broad concept including decency in work place, adherence to moral values, and providing perceptible freedom to the human soul to flourish to his or her highest possibilities. She remarked that it is crucial to raise awareness and foster discussions on creating a safer environment for women. She praised the fine work done by Udayan Care and Udayan Shalini Fellowships for vulnerable girls.

During the Panel Discussion following points were discussed:

Dr. Jyotsna Yagnik, Former Principal Judge highlighted the importance of a strong legal framework, referencing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) as a foundation for societal safety. She emphasized stricter control over crime through faster legal processes and firmer enforcement of laws. She stressed that a swift and fair justice system serves as a powerful deterrent to crime, urging reforms to close legal loopholes and ensure justice for victims, particularly in cases of offenses against women and vulnerable groups.

 Dr. Prashant Bhimani, renowned Psychologist discussed the psychological roots of criminal behavior, explaining that many criminals come from troubled backgrounds or childhood trauma. He emphasized the importance of fostering respect for women and empathy in children to build a healthier society. He advocated for early intervention through mental health support and counseling to prevent the development of criminal tendencies, underscoring that a positive upbringing leads to a safer society.

 Dr. Lavina Sinha, IPS, DCP (Cyber Crime), Gujarat Police, addressed the rise of cybercrime, explaining the legal safeguards in place to combat fraud and online harassment. She emphasized the need for greater public awareness about online safety and encouraged responsible behavior on social media platforms. She also highlighted how anonymity online often emboldens criminal behavior, stressing the importance of digital literacy and vigilance to prevent cyber offenses.

The discussion was moderated by renowned artist and moderator Shri Dhvanit Thaker. Vice President, Shri Apurva Shah concluded the event by proposing vote of thanks.
