GLS-FOC Hosts 4-Day DATA ANALYTICS Workshop to Empower FinTech Students

Ahmedabad, GLS University , Faculty of Commerce arranged an intensive and highly insightful series of practical sessions on internet of things (IOT) AND DATA ANALYTICS conducted under the guidance of faculty member MS. Bharti Pariyani from DELLOITTE for B.COM.( FINTECH) students.

These sessions were designed to provide students with hands-on exposure to two of the most transformative technologies driving the modern digital and financial ecosystem.

The sessions emphasized experiential learning. Students were instructed to carry their laptops, which enabled them to actively participate in real-time exercises, simulations, and demonstrations. The overall aim was to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application, particularly within the domains of finance and technology.

The four-day programme began with an introduction to the fundamentals of IOT. Ms. Pariyani explained how IOT enables physical devices, sensors, and systems to collect and exchange data over the internet. Students gained clarity on how IOT forms the backbone of several modern services such as smart homes, automated manufacturing, supply-chain management, and digital payment infrastructure. Special emphasis was placed on the role of IOT in the fintech industry—for example, biometric authentication, smart ATMS, POS devices, and contactless payments.

Hands-on activities helped students understand how sensors collect data, how devices communicate, and how IOT networks are structured. Demonstrations included connecting basic components, visualising sensor outputs, and observing how data is transmitted in real-time. These exercises allowed the students to appreciate interoperability and the complexities of device communication.

The later part of the programme shifted focus to DATA ANALYTICS, which has become a crucial skill in the fintech industry. The faculty member introduced students to the basics of structured and unstructured data, data capturing mechanisms, and the importance of data-driven decision-making. Students were introduced to data cleaning, sorting, and interpretation using simple datasets relevant to finance. They learned how raw data is transformed into meaningful insights using analytical techniques.

The students also performed basic exercises on spreadsheets and introductory analytics tools. Through guided practice, they experienced how financial trends, customer behaviour, and transactional patterns can be studied through data. Real-life examples from banking, insurance, and digital payment ecosystems helped students understand the significance of analytics in fraud detection, credit scoring, customer segmentation, and operational optimisation.

These sessions helped students to :

  • understand the architecture and components of internet of things systems.
  • explore the applications of IOT in daily life and in financial technology.
  • gain awareness of how data is generated, collected, and transmitted by IOT devices.
  • learn the fundamentals of DATA ANALYTICS, including data cleaning, sorting, and basic

interpretation.

  • use analytical tools to observe trends and draw insights from financial datasets.
  • recognise the importance of data-driven decision-making in fintech operations.
  • understand the role of technology in enhancing efficiency, transparency, and automation in

financial services.

The practical sessions were highly productive and engaging for all students. By working directly on their laptops and participating in live demonstrations, learners developed a stronger conceptual and practical foundation. The exposure to IOT and DATA ANALYTICS at the very beginning of their academic journey will significantly enhance their confidence and competence in advanced fintech courses.

These sessions provided students with a forward-looking perspective on how technology is reshaping the financial world. The programme successfully achieved its objective of equipping students with essential technological skills and sparking curiosity for further exploration in the field of fintech. The workshop was coordinated by CA Dr. Sneha Master.
