Workshop on Creating Inclusion in the Workplace for Persons with Disabilities

Ahmedabad, Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry (GCCI) in association with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), DEOC Accessibility Services Private Limited, Gender Disability Resource Centre (GDRC), National Career Service Centre for Differently Abled (NCS)

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) hosted a workshop on Creating Inclusion in the Workplace for Persons with Disabilities on 17th January, 2025 at Hotel Lemon Tree, Khanpur, Ahmedabad.  The event attracted a diverse group of speakers and participants dedicated to promoting inclusivity for individuals with disabilities across various sectors.

During the inaugural address, Shri Rajesh Gandhi, Sr. Vice President, GCCI emphasized the economic advantages of inclusivity while calling for a collective commitment to dismantling barriers that hinder the participation of individuals with disabilities in the workforce. He asserted that creating an inclusive workplace is not merely a legal obligation but a strategic imperative that can drive innovation and enhance overall business success.

The distinguished speakers included Ms. Himanshi Goyal, Public Policy Analyst, UNDP who underscored the significance of global initiatives in promoting disability inclusion. Shri Vinod Agrawal, Past Chairman, CII Gujarat Chapter addressed corporate responsibility and the vital role of businesses in supporting individuals with disabilities. Shri Rohan Shah, Chair, Young Indians Ahmedabad Chapter emphasized the importance of leadership, diversity, talent and infrastructure development.

Dr. Munzal Dave, General Manager, District Industrial Centre proposed the use of the term “Specially Abled” instead of “Disabled” and elaborated on various government incentives. Ms. Nita Panchal, State Coordinator, GDRC shared valuable insights into local strategies for improving accessibility.

Additionally, Shri Parag Panchal, a noted disability activist, contributed to the discussions by advocating for greater awareness and action towards inclusivity in workplaces. Their collective contributions established a collaborative atmosphere for the day, highlighting the critical need for partnerships in creating inclusive environments.

The workshop featured engaging discussions on various aspects of disability, with a focus on exploring disability through a social model perspective. Experts provided insights into different types of disabilities and the assistive technologies that enhance accessibility, while also addressing critical topics such as disability legislation and frameworks for creating inclusive workplaces.

Participants actively engaged in group activities aimed at fostering inclusion and developing actionable strategies for implementing best practices within their organizations. A dedicated session on inclusive recruitment practices and career advancement strategies also featured speakers from various sectors.

The Disability Awareness and Inclusion Summit marked a significant stride towards promoting inclusivity in society. By uniting diverse voices and perspectives, the summit underscored our collective responsibility to cultivate environments where individuals with disabilities can thrive.
