India’s Job Market Cools, but Tech Roles Continue to Hire – Indeed Hiring Lab

Indeed’s APAC Economist shares, Tech hiring remains the heartbeat of India’s job market. Despite a July slowdown, demand for software developers and analytics professionals stays strong, reflecting India’s growing tilt towards high-skilled work.”

Pay transparency in India is gaining momentum, driven by jobseeker demand

Bengaluru, 28 August 2025: India’s formal job market softened in July, with job postings on global matching and hiring platform Indeed declining 5.8% after two consecutive months of growth. While postings were down 14.9% year-on-year, they still remain 70% above pre-pandemic levels, highlighting the resilience of formal hiring despite cyclical cooling. The job postings have fallen 21% since peaking in January 2023.

This trend highlights a cooling labour market, even as India continues its gradual shift from informal work towards formal employment. Indeed’s data reflects hiring in the formal economy, where healthcare and logistics are emerging as the rising sectors, but technology continues to anchor India’s formal job creation.

“Even when overall hiring slows, tech remains the heartbeat of India’s job market. With one in five formal postings for software development, the real challenge isn’t demand, it’s whether we can build a workforce skilled enough to meet it,” said Callam Pickering, Indeed’s APAC Senior Economist.

High-skilled roles anchor India’s hiring trends

Despite the overall dip, high-skilled roles continue to lead the hiring momentum. Over the past three months, data & analytics postings grew by 15.4%, followed by logistic support (+14.3%), therapy (+13.7%), and dental (+13.6%). Software development, while not the fastest growing, remained consistent with postings up 9.2% in the last three months.

On the other hand, job postings such as medical information (-12.3%), pharmacy (-10.7%), education & instruction (-8.0%), and physicians & surgeons (-7.8%) saw significant declines. These contrasting trends highlight a long-term move towards tech and other high-skill roles, even as overall hiring fluctuates.

Pay transparency has eased in India in 2025

Another defining trend in July was a dip in pay transparency. Earlier this year, Indeed data showed that more than half of job postings in India included salary information. But in July, that number slipped to 45%, with pay details featured in 45% of postings. Employers who share pay information hold a clear competitive advantage, as transparency helps job seekers make faster and more informed decisions.

The degree of transparency, however, varies sharply by sector, from 88% in childcare and dental roles to just 9.4% in data & analytics. Tech jobs consistently rank among the least transparent: only 18.2% of IT systems & solutions postings, 18.3% of software development roles, and 28% of IT infrastructure, operations & support listings disclose salary details. Given tech’s reputation for high salaries, some employers may feel less pressure to disclose pay, but in an increasingly competitive talent market, transparency remains a differentiator.

While there is no shortage of workers in India, there can often be mismatches between the skills job seekers possess and the skills employers seek. Many companies in India are looking for highly skilled workers in tech or management, and that won’t always align with what’s on offer. Consequently, skill shortages remain common in India, particularly in higher-skilled segments.
