GCCI organized a Training Session on Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO)

GCCI in association with ITCFSAN & FSSAI (Western Region) organized a Training Session on Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO) on Wednesday, 19th November, 2025.

Ahmedabad, GCCI, in association with the International Training Centre for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (ITCFSAN) and the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (Western Region), organized a focused Training Session on Repurpose Used Cooking Oil (RUCO) on 19th November 2025 at A.H. Hall, GCCI. The programme was aimed at enhancing awareness and capacity building among stakeholders on safe handling, monitoring, and repurposing of used cooking oil in alignment with FSSAI directives.

Shri H. L. Ravat, Joint Commissioner, Food & Drugs Control Administration (FDCA), Gujarat, emphasized the FSSAI framework for repurposing used cooking oil and highlighted the FDCA’s role in enforcing these regulations across the state. He highlighted that monitoring Total Polar Compounds (TPC) is mandatory and oil must be discarded once TPC exceeds 25 percent. He urged food business operators to work only with authorized collectors and avoid unsafe disposal practices.

Shri Rajesh Gandhi, Sr. Vice President, GCCI, emphasized the GCCI’s commitment to fostering compliant, responsible and sustainable practices within the food industry. He highlighted GCCI’s role in supporting regulatory compliance, safeguarding public health and promoting sustainability through initiatives like RUCO. He noted that repurposing used cooking oil is not just a regulatory requirement but an investment in environmental protection and long-term economic growth.

Shri Kaushik Patel, Chairman, Food & Dairy Committee, emphasized that compliance with RUCO and proper monitoring of Total Polar Compounds (TPC) is now essential for all Food Business Operators. He noted that the session aims to equip participants with practical guidance on safe disposal and regulatory requirements.

Ms. Vaidehi Kalzunkar, Deputy Director (Tech.), ITCFSAN–FSSAI, Western Region, highlighted ITCFSAN’s role in building capacity across the food sector. The centre offers specialized training for regulators, food businesses, laboratories and consumers, covering food regulations, packaging, import requirements, safe handling, and advanced lab techniques, benefiting thousands across the ecosystem.

Ms. Akshda Bane, Central Licensing Authority, Ahmedabad Branch Office, FSSAI emphasized the need for strict compliance with scientific standards, proper documentation, regular updates and safe food-handling practices. She also highlighted FSSAI’s role in inspections, accurate labelling, and providing training and technical support to promote a safe and responsible food ecosystem in Gujarat.

The event included two detailed Technical Sessions:

  • Shri Joseph Amrutraj, Technical Officer, Ahmedabad Branch Office, FSSAI, delivered an expert presentation on regulatory frameworks, monitoring mechanisms and industry responsibilities.
  • Julia Pape, Communications & Public Relations, Münzer Bharat, provided insights from the industry’s perspective, highlighting technological solutions and the broader impact of RUCO initiatives.

An interactive Q&A session allowed participants to engage with experts and clarify operational challenges. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Shri Kunal Thakkar, Co-Chairman, Food & Dairy Committee, acknowledging the contributions of speakers, partners and participants.
